Yagan Square Design & Creation: QLD Presentation

  • Brickworks Design Studio 27 James Street Fortitude Valley, QLD, 4006 Australia (map)

Yagan Square is one of Australia's leading landscaping design projects, pushing the limits of what can be achieved.  Join Kirsten Bauer from Aspect Studios, artist Jon Tarry, and Urbanstone's Simon Monteath.

Located in the heart of Perth’s CBD – within the arms of the Horseshoe Bridge – Yagan Square will be one of the city’s most popular community, meeting and celebration places once it opens early 2018.

Lyons is the Principal Architect on Yagan Square, designing in association with iredale pedersen hook architects and landscape architects, ASPECT Studios.  The design team adopted a collaborative process involving the Metropolitan Redevelopment Authority, the Whadjuk Working Group and the City of Perth.

The concept is, water wares stone over time, while drawing on the deep ecology of water systems in the area and the importance in sustaining aspects of life. Two hundred metres of individually carved stone moves between a distinct formal language of urban edge, steps, pathways, walls and an expanse of landscape forms of gardens, planted terrain, playscapes and pools of reflection. The project is an example of the success of creative minds, dynamic designers and skilled professionals working with primary materials and the prosaic of constructing culturally sustainable environments.

The design team will talk about the collaborative methodology informing ‘Waterlines’, each stage of translation, from the raw quarry to skilled manufacture, install realisation and public response.
