Surf Parade demonstrates what is possible when streets are designed for many types of use, by many types of people. The street still enables private vehicle traffic on a day-to-day basis, with functional lighting, and an enhanced pedestrian experience along widened footpaths. During event mode the footpaths continue to function for dining and access, but programmable street lighting can change and people can occupy the carriageway.

Change was achieved following extensive consultation and collaboration. To illustrate: construction was halted during prime trading periods, and bus routes have been re-routed so that access is maintained, but noise and fumes minimised. Services were upgraded throughout and Surf Parade is now a functional, attractive and popular space for locals and visitors alike.
