City Bikeways- North South Bikeways
All too often, infrastructure projects are narrowly focused on the delivery of a particular function. In contrast this project provides a precedent both for prioritizing active travel and the ways in which it can be accommodated into existing streets.
Perhaps most importantly, through extensive consultation, the design philosophy and approach considered the street in its entirety, including the safety and experience of all users, residents and businesses, as well as existing features and the character of Adelaide’s East End precinct. The broadened scope included the opportunistic planting of one hundred trees.
The jury commended the City of Adelaide and the project team for their leadership in delivering a replicable model for separated bikeways, including the preparation of a City Bikeways Design Guide, which may have application Australia-wide. This is an exemplary project for remaking our cities.
